A DIFFERENT TENT

John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Lord has always intended to be among His people; from the days of the tabernacle of Moses in the wilderness to the blazing glory of Pentecost in the upper room the Lord has remained steadfast. He wants to be with us. We can learn from God’s constant provision of being among us as we look at His plan through the ages. In the tabernacle of Moses the Lord would meet with Moses face to face. When Moses came out from these meetings he would wear a veil to cloak his shining face. This veil signified what the problem was; man was separated from God by his sin. The veil in the temple also spoke the same message, man cannot come into my presence.

Today’s scripture speaks of God’s answer to this age long dilemma. What was the answer? He would come amongst us Himself as a man, He would come to earth as the only begotten Son of God, Jesus Christ. He would be the prototype of this brand new race of man. He died for us on the cross, His blood has redeemed us from our sins. Now, we too can approach God. Better than that, He can tabernacle in our hearts. Here are some thoughts from Watchman Nee on God’s plan to tabernacle among us.

“Hundreds of tents made up the camp of Israel, but there was one tent quite different from all the rest. In the common tents you could do just as you pleased: eat or fast, work or rest, be joyful or sober, noisy or silent. But that other tent commanded reverence and awe. As you neared it, you instinctively walked more quietly, and when you stood right before it, you bowed your head in solemn silence. What was so very special about it? Outwardly it was of very ordinary material; but within was the Shekinah of the living God. “Know ye not that your body is a temple of the Holy Ghost?” Has the solemn fact dawned on us that, at new birth, very God made our hearts His dwelling place?”

We can now come boldly before the throne of grace, access has been purchased by the blood of Jesus. We not only come before Him like Moses did, the Lord actually comes to live inside of us. We have become the tabernacle of God.
