3 ways to enjoy reading the Bible without the use of a smartphone, an app or other tech gadgets

Reading the Bible is a very enjoyable pursuit and habit. And with the introduction of devices that allow for great applications that can be used to enhance our devotions and Bible-reading times, it just gets better.

But did you know that you can enjoy it even more, without the need for those devices?

In Jesus’ time, there were no smartphones. David never had iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks. Moses had tablets, but they didn’t run on Windows, iOS, Android or other operating systems. Although that sounds funny, it’s even funnier that we have all the comforts of these devices they never had, but their joy and delight over the Word of God easily surpass ours!

We read the writer of Psalm 1:2 saying that joyful are those who “delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.”

Joshua delighted himself in the Book of the Law, carefully meditated on it, obeyed it and passed it on to the Israelites under him. (see Joshua 1:6-9; 24:25)

The prophet Jeremiah was so hungry for the Word of God, that he ate it like food! (see Jeremiah 15:16)

Even the Lord Jesus, who is God Himself, had a thorough love for the Word of God and used it while He was being tempted by Satan in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-13). He also used it as the springboard and foundation of His ministry. (see Luke 4:16-21)

Friend, all of them, including the Lord Jesus, loved the Scripture and enjoyed it without the need for all of today’s smartphone apps and stuff. We can enjoy it like they did, too. Would you want to enjoy reading and devouring the Word of God? Here are some things you can do.

1. Believe that God speaks through it

Friend, the Word of God IS the Word of God. Since it’s from Him, He speaks through it. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

2. Believe that God has a personal message for you

Friend, God speaks to you personally through His Word. He does this through the power of the Holy Spirit, who opens our eyes to things of the Spirit. Jesus said in John 16:13, “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

Ask the Holy Spirit to allow you to receive personal revelations from the Lord, just like what He did with Elisha’s servant in 2 Kings 6:16-17.

3. Obey the Word of God

Friend, James 1:22 tells us, “Don’t just listen to God’s Word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.”

We will make no use of God’s Word without obeying it. We must obey what it says for us to experience its power working in our lives. Remember, Joshua’s success came through His careful obedience to the Book of the Law.
