Is it safe to have secret sins?

The Bible tells us that sins are dangerous, whatever they may be. They are so dangerous that only the finished work of Christ is able to set us free and save us from the perils that they bring. Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Knowing this, brothers and sisters, we should all be wary and alert against the dangers of sin, most especially the lie that it’s okay to have secret sins.

What are secret sins?

Secret sins are the sins that people do in secret, or at least keep in secret. Unlike sins done in the open, these can be considered more dangerous because of their deceitful nature. Secret sins make the person responsible for them feel that it’s okay to do them because they can get away with it.

Secret sins are like addictions that can get a person hooked up until they are found out or are convicted by the Holy Spirit. They are not limited to illegal drug use or pornographic addictions, however. They can include a multitude of sins – sins which the person responsible is not willing to admit or bring to the light.

Dangers of secret sins

Secret sins are very dangerous to our walk with God and to our lives. Consider how King David, the “man after God’s own heart,” utterly displeased God with his adultery with a married woman named Bathsheba, and his murder plot to kill her husband Uriah, in 2 Samuel 11. “But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord” (2 Samuel 11:27).

God needed to rebuke David for his sin because he was unrepentant and did not see his sin as sin. Maybe he thought he could get away with murder, but no, he could not run away from God. No one can run away from God. 2 Samuel 12 tells us how God rebuked David.

Here are some dangers that secret sins have, as seen in David’s example.

1. Secret sins deceive us into thinking that it’s okay to commit sin

Committing sin and “perfectly” concealing it dulls a person’s understanding of sin’s apparent danger, and distorts his view of how God hates sin.

2. Secret sins make us think that we’re above others

Just like what happened to David – how he got mad at the person involved in the prophet Nathan’s parable (see 2 Samuel 12:1-6) – we will be deceived into thinking that we’re above reproach and better than others, when in fact we’re no better than others if not for Christ. Our sense of justice and righteousness automatically becomes distorted.

3) Secret sins anger God

Just like how David did not displease God and actually caused God to be blasphemed (see 2 Samuel 12:14), a Christian’s secret sins cause God to be displeased and be blasphemed by His enemies.

Secret sins, not-so-secret dangers

Not only do secret sins degrade our ability to walk in purity, righteousness and holiness, having them also displeases God. Friends, be careful to stay away from these sins.

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.” (Ephesians 5:8-13)
