Kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart reveals how kidnapper’s porn addiction made her life a ‘living hell’

It is never easy for kidnap victims to share their harrowing experiences during captivity, but Elizabeth Smart has decided to be brave about it in order to help fight the proliferation of porn.

Smart was kidnapped at knife-point from her bed when she was only 14 years old on June 2002, according to Life Site News. She was taken to the mountains and instructed to be the “bride” of her kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, who then bound her feet to the bed and raped her.

For the next nine months, Smart was raped three to four times a day. The young girl was subjected to a lot of horrific acts because of pornography.

“I remember he pulled out this magazine full of hardcore pornography. And I remember he would just sit and look at it and stare at it,” Smart shares in an interview with the anti-porn group Fight the New Drug. “When he was done, he would look at me, and he’d be like, ‘Now we’re gonna do this.'”

“It just led to him raping more – more than he already did, which was a lot,” she continues. “Looking at pornography wasn’t enough for him. Having sex with his wife after he looked at pornography, it wasn’t enough for him. And then it led to him going out and kidnapping me. He just always wanted more.”

Smart says she cannot say whether or not pornography addiction led Mitchell to kidnap her, but all she knows for sure is that it made her “living Hell worse.”

Determined not to let her past define her, Smart strove to have a better life for herself after escaping Mitchell. She is now happily married with a daughter of her own, and she calls herself “an advocate against pornography.”

“I witnessed first hand just how damaging it is,” she says.

As for Mitchell, he tried kidnapping two other girls, including Smart’s cousin, while she was still in captivity. He has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.
