Top 50 Stories on The Aquila Report for 2016: 41-50

In keeping with the journalistic tradition of looking back at the recent past, we present the top 50 stories of the year that were read on The Aquila Report site based on the number of hits. We will present the 50 stories in groups of 10 to run on five lists on consecutive days. Here are numbers 41-50.

In 2016 The Aquila Report (TAR) posted over 3,000 stories. At the end of each year we feature the top 50 stories that were read. The top story this year received just under 26,900 hits.

TAR posts about 8 new stories each day, on a variety of subjects – all of which we trust are of interest to our readers. As a web magazine TAR is an aggregator of news and information that we believe will provide articles that will inform the church of current trends and movements within the church and culture.

  1. Former Prescott, AZ Pastor, Tom Chantry, Charged With Child Molestation

According to the Christ Reformed Baptist Church of Hale’s Corners, Wisconsin, website, where he is listed as Pastor, Chantry moved to Arizona after finishing his seminary studies in California, and stayed for five years. He next moved to Washington and then taught at a Christian school in the Chicago area for four years, before moving to the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha in 2006. That’s where he was arrested in July, on a warrant taken out by Prescott Police.

  1. R.C. Sproul Jr. Resigned From Ligonier Ministries After DUI Arrest With Minor in Vehicle

Court records show that an initial hearing of the case was held Dec. 7 when a bond of $5,000 was also issued. On Tuesday, an order for monitored conditional release was entered by the Allen Superior Court 4’s Pretrial Services Division. And on Wednesday, an appearance was filed by another Sproul attorney, Patrick Justin Arata.

  1. Another Follow-Up On My Post Concerning Denny Burk’s Article

I grieve over the state of modern reformed(ish) evangelicalism. Quite frankly it looks more and more like a racket to me. Power has been concentrated in the hands of a very few and they all happen to be friends. Mess with one of their family and it’s only a matter of time before Clemenza is sent out searching for you.

  1. Controversial Megachurch Pastor Mark Driscoll Finds a New Flock

“I don’t know why he’d hide [his history with Mars Hill], or think that he could,” said Warren Throckmorton, a psychology professor at Grove City College in Pennsylvania and perhaps the most prominent of a handful of fastidious religion bloggers who have documented the particulars of Driscoll’s troubles. “Given that he built his brand on going public with things, being a celebrity, and marketing, I would think people would want to know what actually happened at Mars Hill before they welcomed a similar church in Phoenix.

  1. What To Do When a Pastor Falls

“One of the immediate reactions to a public fall of a respected pastor is a sense of betrayal. Those who have benefited from the pastor’s ministry feel as though they have been personally deceived. That’s even more true when it’s your own pastor—the one who baptized you or did your premarital counseling or was there with you in the hospital when your parent died.”

  1. Eternal Subordination of the Son and the ESV Study Bible Notes

In 2008, Crossway published the ESV Study Bible. Dr. Wayne Grudem was the General Editor, and Dr. Bruce Ware was one of the 95 contributors to the project. When I began researching into ESS doctrine being taught by Drs. Grudem and Ware, I looked at some passages in my ESV Study Bible to see how they were explained. Given the recent debate over ESS/EFS/ERAS, I thought it would be worthwhile to demonstrate the influence this teaching has had in possibly unexpected places. The following are quotes from the ESV Study Bible study notes on various Bible passages.

  1. “Who Are The 123 Who Voted Against The Overture?” Here’s One.

When it comes to calling upon believers to confess and repent of the sins of a prior generation the vast majority of which they had little if anything to do with personally, it seems to me we are in danger of trivializing repentance along the lines of Calvin’s warning and at the same time falling into general repentance rather than one of particular sins, particularly.

  1. Saeed Abedini on Marriage Troubles: ‘My Life Is Harder Now Than When I Was in Prison’

“I can say my life after I got released is harder than when I was in prison because of the media and all the false accusations. After my freedom, people who prayed for me for years every night couldn’t rejoice for my freedom because of the things in the media,” Abedini told local news station KIVI-TV ABC 6 in an interview.

  1. What Do You Think? Part 2

But when anyone preaches from the pulpit that individuals with homosexual desires are “born that way through no fault of their own,” then this is clearly and willfully redefining this biblical teaching. Homosexual character and desiresare, like all sin, brought into effect by our sinful desires, passions and lusts; it is one of the fruits of our corrupt nature.

  1. CRC and RCA: The Fundamental Differences

When Christ prayed that his church would achieve “unity” (John 17:23) I do not believe he necessarily meant institutional unity. True unity between churches such as the CRC and RCA will be accomplished by cooperation and collaboration on the local level among individual congregations.
