Breathe Life! (Sep 29th)

Verse

Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they come to life.”‘ So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath. Prophesy, son of man. Tell the breath, ‘GOD, the Master, says, Come from the four winds. Come, breath. Breathe on these slain bodies. Breathe life!'” So I prophesied, just as he commanded me. The breath entered them and they came alive! They stood up on their feet, a huge army.

Ezekiel 37:9-10 msg

Thought

God took dirt and shaped it and breathed into it the breath of life, and we became a living being. That is the Bible’s account of how we came to be (Genesis 2:7). So as Ezekiel is held in a foreign land — far from the Temple in which he was to serve, the Temple now destroyed, and God’s people in exile — God reaches back to the creation story and reminds Ezekiel of the truth. If God’s Breath, the Holy Spirit, can make dirt come alive, then the Spirit can also take a destroyed nation and bring it back to life, too. God’s Breath, the Holy Spirit, brings life. The Spirit brings life to where there was none. The Spirit brings life to what is dead. The Spirit brings life to sagging hopes and lost dreams. The Spirit brings life to people who have lost their way and given up. The Spirit can bring life to us, today!

Prayer

O Father, breathe on me and breathe into me your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name I ask this. Amen.
