In the Middle (Sep 27th)

Verse

The hand of the LORD was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.

Ezekiel 37:1 tniv

Thought

I don’t know about you, but that’s where I find myself: in the middle! I’m in the middle of messes in people’s lives. I’m in the middle of trying to figure things out for myself. I’m in the middle of more ministry opportunities in the lives of people looking for Jesus than I’ve got time or helpers to address — or as I like to say, I’ve got more bread than I’ve got peanut butter to spread. The Holy Spirit has placed me in the middle of all of this. As all this has happened, I’m deeply convicted that the Holy Spirit wants to put us in the middle of God’s work in the world, but we don’t follow the Spirit’s lead. Sometimes it is because of sin and rebellion in our hearts. Sometimes it’s because we are like Jonah and don’t want to go. Sometimes it’s because we don’t believe the Spirit would yank us out of one place and put us in another to do the work of God today like he did in the days the Bible was being written. So I want to challenge each of us to ask God to reveal what is keeping us from letting the Spirit put us in the middle of God’s work.

Prayer

O Almighty God, LORD of the nations and Abba Father to my heart, I ask for your help. Please, dear Father, reveal to me the obstacles that I am allowing to block the Spirit’s work in my life. I know that I allow these obstacles to keep me from following the Spirit into the middle of the places you want me to be. Please forgive me. Even more, dear Father, help me remove those obstacles and follow your Spirit’s lead. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
