Key Thought

Jesus finishes his work as our ransom from sin and death. Please ponder the incredible words of Mark 15:37. God in human flesh dies. He dies because he allows his life to be taken. He dies as one of us. He dies in pain, humiliation, rejection, and ridicule. He dies because he loves us and wants to free us from our sin by his blood. He completes the work that God has given him to do in his incarnation.

Prayer

Almighty God, I cannot even begin to imagine how this moment of Jesus' death impacted your heart and the hosts of heaven. In my human heart, just reading this story makes me want to shout "Hallelujah!" in praise to your Son for the victory he wins by laying down his life. At the same time, my heart breaks at the thought of our human rebellion—our utter sinfulness—that placed Jesus on the Cross both physically and spiritually. During this time of year as we think of Jesus' birth, I am reminded once again that he was born to pay this horrible price. Thank you for my redemption. Thank you for paying such a horrible price to win that redemption. All praises be to you, O God, the Father of grace and to your Son and my Savior who paid the price for my sin. Hallelujah! Amen.

He gave himself for us. He died to free us from all evil. He died to make us pure people that belong only to him—people that are always wanting to do good things.
Titus 2:14

Jesus and the people with him were going to Jerusalem. Jesus was leading the people. Jesus' followers were amazed. But those people that followed behind them were afraid. Jesus gathered the twelve apostles again and talked with them alone. Jesus told them what would happen in Jerusalem. Jesus said, "We are going to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be given to the leading priests and teachers of the law. The priests and the teachers of the law will say that the Son of Man must die. They will give the Son of Man to the non-Jewish people. Those people will laugh at him and spit on him. They will beat him with whips and kill him. But on the third day after his death, he will rise to life again." In the same way, the Son of Man did not come for other people to serve him. But the Son of Man came to serve other people. The Son of Man came to give his life to save many people."
Mark 10:32-34, 45

So do you think that we should continue sinning so that God will give us more and more grace (kindness)? No! We died to (quit living) our old sinful lives. So how can we continue living with sin? Did you forget that all of us became part of Christ Jesus when we were baptized ? We shared his death in our baptism. So when we were baptized, we were buried with Christ and shared his death. We were buried with Christ so that we could {be raised up and} live a new life. This happened the same as Christ was raised from death by the wonderful power of the Father. Christ died, and we have been joined with Christ by dying too. So we will also be joined with him by rising from death like Christ rose from death. We know that our old life died with Christ on the cross. This happened so that our sinful selves would have no power over us. And then we would not be slaves to sin. Any person that has died is made free from sin's control (power). If we died with Christ, we know that we will also live with him.
