Key Thought

Jesus' death was assured—it was confirmed by those in authority. Jesus' burial was done by friends—Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus (John 19:39) took him down off the cross, wrapped his body, and buried him—and his tomb was secured (Matt. 27:62-66). The women who had faithfully accompanied Jesus through his whole ordeal now saw his lifeless body placed in the tomb. His followers felt that all hope was gone. The full reality of Jesus' death had settled into the hearts of his followers. There are no doubts about any of the harsh realities of his life's end.

Prayer

O Father, the witness of these women helps make Jesus' death and burial emotionally and factually real to me. I can only imagine their heartbreak and their deep sense of loss. However, dear Lord, this heartbreak also makes their testimony to Jesus' resurrection even more powerful. Thank you for their faithful witness which makes the anguish they bore a reason for hope and not a hopeless end. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Related Scriptures

Later, a man named Joseph from Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. (Joseph was a follower of Jesus. But he did not tell people, because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders.) Pilate said that Joseph could take the body of Jesus. So Joseph came and took Jesus' body away. Nicodemus went with Joseph. Nicodemus was the man who had come to Jesus before and talked to him at night. Nicodemus brought about 100 pounds of spices. This was a mixture of myrrh and aloes. These two men took Jesus' body. They wrapped it in pieces of linen cloth with the spices. (This is how the Jews bury people.) In the place where Jesus was killed on the cross, there was a garden. In the garden there was a new tomb. No person had ever been buried there before. The men put Jesus in that tomb because it was near, and the Jews were preparing to start their Sabbath day.
John 19:38-42

The women that had come from Galilee with Jesus followed Joseph. They saw the tomb. Inside they saw where the body of Jesus was put. Then the women left to prepare some sweet-smelling spices {to put on Jesus' body}. On the Sabbath day they rested. The law of Moses commanded all people to do this.
Luke 23:55-56

The next day after the Sabbath day, Mary from Magdala, Salome, and Mary the mother of James bought some sweet-smelling spices. They wanted to put the spices on Jesus' body. Very early on that day, the first day of the week, the women were going to the tomb. It was very early after sunrise. The women said to each other, "There is a large stone covering the entrance of the tomb. Who will move the stone for us?" Then the women looked and saw that the stone was moved. The stone was very large, but it was moved away from the entrance. The women walked into the tomb. They saw a young man there wearing a white robe. The man was sitting on the right side of the tomb. The women were afraid. But the man said, "Don't be afraid. You are looking for Jesus from Nazareth, the one that was killed on a cross. He has risen from death! He is not here. Look, here is the place they put him when he was dead. Now go and tell his followers. And {be sure to} tell Peter. Tell them, 'Jesus is going into Galilee. He will be there before you. You will see him there like he told you before.'"
Mark 16:1-7
