Everybody wants to have fun, including us Christians. However, the fun that the world gives isn’t really the fun that we long for. Rather, we should be longing for the fun that God brings. After all, God provides even for our enjoyment (see 1 Timothy 6:17).
Godly fun
There’s such a thing as godly fun. This is the kind that makes both God and His child happy. Would you want to have it? Here are some things you need to live a life of fun and godliness combined.
1. Knowledge of God’s will
Paul says that we will be able to live a fruitful life if we have this. Here’s what he said, according to Colossians 1:9-10
“So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.”
When we find and pursue our real purpose in God – that we would live to glorify and please Him – we begin to live our lives differently, and with a lot less clutter. We focus on what really matters (see Philippians 1:9-11), and stop doing unimportant things.
2. Trust in the Lord
Some of us think that we need money to buy things that we will enjoy, but in reality everything that we can buy on earth is passing and will soon fade away. When the things that we buy for our enjoyment get stolen, broken or misplaced, our happiness over them goes away as well. We should instead learn to trust in God instead of our money and material things.
Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 6:17, “Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.”
3. Set boundaries
Now that you are in Christ, you should know that the passing and fleeting pleasures of sin only pierce us with sorrows while offending God Himself. Now that you are in Christ, you have been given the power to say “no” to sin, and in fact you shouldn’t sin anymore.
Paul reminds us in Romans 6:1-3, “Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?”
In conclusion
When we learn that we can live a life of fun away from sin and wrongdoing, we actually begin to live a life that’s full of fun and godliness combined. Seek to honour God in all you do, including your enjoyment.
