Upside Down to the World – Matthew 5:5

Key Passage

"What great blessings there are for the people that are humble! They will have the land {God promised}."

— Matthew 5:5 ERV (Read Full Text)

Key Thought

Everything in our culture and experience says the meek and the humble will get run over and will be targets for bullies. But God says these are the very ones to receive the earth as an inheritance. Why? Because their strength comes from their dependence upon God and not upon worldly power, an accumulation of possessions, or unleashed violence. They don't try to break the grip of oppression by power, but by their undaunted faithfulness in the face of unfairness, abuse, and difficulty. Character and faithfulness provide their power to change others, not political might or monetary power. Jesus, of course, is the example of this kind of humility. All of God's promised blessings will come to the humble in the Kingdom family where the first will be last and the last will be first and the greatest of all is a servant.

Prayer

Almighty God, help me to be patient and wait for your vindication and not extract a cheap, selfish revenge on others. I trust your faithfulness to bring about what is right and vindicate your servants. I know, through Jesus, that you will bring victory to your faithful and humble servants. In the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Related Scriptures

In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus. Christ himself was like God in everything. Christ was equal with God. But Christ did not think that being equal with God was something that he must keep. He gave up his place with God and agreed to be like a servant. He was born to be a man and became like a servant. And when he was living as a man, he humbled himself by being fully obedient to God. He obeyed even when that caused him to die. And he died on a cross. Christ obeyed God, so God raised Christ to the most important place. God made the name of Christ greater than every other name. God did this because he wants every person to bow for the name of Jesus. Every person in heaven, on the earth, and under the earth will bow. Every person will confess (say), "Jesus Christ is Lord (Master)." When they say this, it will bring glory to God the Father.
Philippians 2:5-11

The person who respects the Lord is learning to be wise. A person must be humble before he can truly respect the Lord.
Proverbs 15:33

God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So always do these things: Show mercy to people; be kind, humble, gentle, and patient. Don't be angry with each other, but forgive each other. If another person does something wrong against you, then forgive that person. Forgive other people because the Lord forgave you. Do all these things; but most important, love each other. Love is the thing that holds you all together in perfect unity.
Colossians 3:12-14
