Faith and science don’t always mesh, but world-renowned evangelist Billy Graham believes that scientific discoveries should actually fuel people’s beliefs that God is real.
“I’m grateful for every discovery scientists have made,” he writes on his Kansas City Star column, adding that he is particularly impressed by the “remarkable advances made by medical science over the last few centuries.”
These incredible discoveries, according to Graham, have strengthened his confidence in God and the Bible because only He is capable of such magnificence and complex creations.
“For one thing, every scientific discovery confirms the Bible’s statement that behind this incredibly complex creation is a Creator: God,” he says. “Not every scientist believes in God, I know, but I’ve met many who do, and without exception they have told me how their discoveries have strengthened their faith in God.”
Another reason why Graham’s faith has been strengthened by scientific discoveries is because science alone can never truly answer all of life’s most basic questions. Graham says science cannot answer where people came from, and why they are here in this world. Science also cannot answer where people will go when they die, or how they should live. In contrast, the Bible has successfully managed to answer these questions.
“The main reason I know the Bible is true, however, is because it points us to Jesus Christ,” continues Graham. “He was God in human flesh, sent from heaven to give us hope. This is why I invite you to make the greatest discovery you could ever make, by investigating with an open heart and mind what the Bible says about Jesus for yourself. Don’t let doubt, or pride, or anything else keep you from putting your faith and trust in him.”
