An R-rated comedy almost beat a Disney cartoon at the box office this week.

Office Christmas Party, about a night of corporate frivolity that gets out of hand, earned an estimated $17.5 million between Thursday and Sunday nights.

It’s the fifth film to co-star Jason Bateman and Jennifer Aniston, and it landed in the middle of their previous openings together — bigger than The Switch (2012, $8.4 million) and Horrible Bosses 2 (2014, $15.5 million), but smaller than Horrible Bosses (2011, $28.3 million) and The Break-Up (2006, $39.2 million).

The top spot this week went to Disney’s Moana, which earned $18.8 million. Moana is the seventh film this year to be #1 in its third week, following four other Disney productions (Finding Dory, The Jungle Book, Zootopia and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and two edgy comic-book movies (Suicide Squad and Deadpool).

Moana has earned $145 million so far in North America and another $93.8 million overseas, for a global total of $238.8 million.

Two other films cracked the top ten for the first time this week.

Nocturnal Animals, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, expanded to 1,262 theatres after three weeks in limited release and grossed $3.19 million, thereby raising its domestic cume to $6.2 million. The film ranked seventh for the weekend.

And Manchester by the Sea, starring Casey Affleck as a man who has to look after his dead brother’s son, expanded to 366 theatres in its fourth week and landed in eighth place with $3.16 million, thereby raising its domestic cume to $8.3 million.

One other film went into wide release but failed to crack the top ten.

Miss Sloane, starring Jessica Chastain as a gun-control lobbyist, expanded to 1,648 theatres in its third week and landed in 11th place with only $1.9 million.

Meanwhile, in other box-office news…

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them earned $10.8 million and ranked third in its fourth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $199.3 million. The film has earned another $480.7 million overseas for a global total of $680 million.

Arrival earned $5.6 million and ranked fourth in its fifth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $81.5 million. The film has earned another $48.4 million overseas for a global total of $129.9 million.

Doctor Strange earned $4.6 million and ranked fifth in its sixth week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $222.4 million. The film has earned another $423.4 million overseas for a global total of $645.8 million.

Allied earned $4 million and ranked sixth in its third week, thereby raising its domestic cume to $35.6 million. The film has earned another $33.9 million overseas for a global total of $69.5 million.
