House Passes Bill to Set Up Defunding Planned Parenthood, Not One Single Democrat Votes for It

On Friday afternoon, the House of Representatives approved a Senate-passed budget resolution that is the first step in defunding the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

This repeal resolution is the first step in the process to re-direct Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding to legitimate health care entities and repeal Obamacare using the budget reconciliation procedure. President-Elect Donald Trump has promised to sign the bill into law.

Not surprisingly, the bill was approved on a party-line vote with almost every Republican supporting the measure and not one single Democrat approving of the resolution that would allow repealing Obamacare and defunding Planned Parenthood. Republicans voted 227-9 for the bill while Democrats voted 189-0 against it.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a pro-life Republican from Louisiana, talked about the Obamacare repeal provisions.

“Obamacare has failed the American people. If you go back to the beginning, it was created with a series of lies to the American people. We all remember, ‘If you like what you have, you can keep it.’ How’s that worked out for millions of Americans who lost the plans that they liked and now cannot keep? What about the promise that premiums would go down by $2,500? President Obama made that claim,” he said.

“Today in states all across the nation you’re seeing premiums go up an average of 25%. That’s on top of double-digit increases every single year Obamacare has been in effect. This law is not working. It’s failing families, it’s costing jobs across our economy. It’s time to repeal this law and actually replace it with reforms that put patients back in charge of their medical decisions with their doctors. What a great concept that would be. It’s about time we focus on lowering the cost of healthcare and giving people real choices,” he said.

He continued:

In so many markets across the country—and it’s a growing number—families have only one choice for health care now, because Obamacare has forced so many people out of the marketplace. Which means you as a family don’t have any choices. Because one choice means a monopoly. And you wonder why the costs are skyrocketing.

“This should not be about preserving somebody’s legacy. It should be about fulfilling those promises to the American people that were broken. And we’re here to fulfill that promise. How refreshing it is that you have people that ran for years saying, ‘we’re going to repeal Obamacare,’ with a president who is ready to sign the bill to repeal Obamacare—and today, just in the second week of this new Congress, we’re taking the first step to fulfill that promise to the American people, to put their healthcare back in their hands with costs that they can afford and real choices that work for all Americans.”

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins made the following comments in support of the resolution:

“I commend the House and Senate for passing the resolution that sets the stage for Congress to repeal many of the most onerous parts of Obamacare and to redirect a huge portion of Planned Parenthood’s federal subsidies to healthcare centers offering services to women and children without subsidizing abortion on demand.

“Planned Parenthood’s political arm spends millions of dollars every election cycle to keep its taxpayer funded gravy train going — to the tune of a half billion in tax dollars a year. That train needs to be redirected especially now that Planned Parenthood has been exposed on video bartering the cost of baby body parts. Congress is doing the right thing to redirect those tax dollars to community centers that will promote health care access without promoting abortion.

“Removing federal funds from Obamacare plans will restore the status quo on abortion funding by stopping subsidies for health care plans that cover abortion on demand. Congress must restore the principle that Americans should not pay for elective abortions through health care subsidies. The repeal of key Obamacare provisions will allow Congress to replace this law with patient centered health care that improves health care benefits, increases choice, and lowers health care costs.

“Today represents the first step by this new Congress and new administration in keeping their commitment to the American people to dismantle President Obama’s disastrous healthcare scheme and end the forced partnership between taxpayers and organizations like Planned Parenthood. We are committed to assisting Congressional leadership and the new administration to repeal and replace Obamacare with a program that is patient-centered and respects the principle that federal funding and subsidies do not go to health care plans with abortion,” concluded Perkins.

During the campaign, Trump said “I am committed to defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they continue to perform abortions and reallocating their funding to community health centers that provide comprehensive health care for women.”

Earlier in the campaign, Trump specifically promised he would sign a bill as president to de-fund Planned Parenthood. In an interview with David Brody of CBN, Trump made that promise:

David Brody: “As a President Trump, if a bill came to your desk that would defund Planned Parenthood you would support that, you would sign that?”

Donald Trump: “Yes, because as long as they do the abortion I am not for funding Planned Parenthood… As long as they’re involved with abortion, as far as I’m concerned forget it, I wouldn’t fund them regardless. I would defund Planned Parenthood because of their view and the fact of their work on abortion…. I am for defunding Planned Parenthood as long as they are involved with abortion.”
