Planned Parenthood CEO: “It’s Really Important” We Do Abortions Because Women “Need” Them

Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards has been making her rounds in the mainstream media again this week to claim that her abortion business needs half a billion of our tax dollars each year.

In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Richards emphasized Planned Parenthood’s non-abortion services in defense of the taxpayer funding it receives. But later in the interview, Richards essentially did admit that abortion is a key priority.

As CNS News reported:

During the discussion, [CNN host Erin] Burnett cited the abortion provider’s annual report, saying CNN “compared the number of abortions that Planned Parenthood performed, more than 327,000 — this is the year 2013 that we could find — in the states that report numbers you provided half of those abortions.”

Given those numbers, Burnett asked, “I mean do you agree Cecile, that Planned Parenthood is core to abortion in America?”

“Well we provide abortion services,” Richards acknowledged. “But we also provide millions of other services to folks and, again, I think it’s really important, Erin, yes, we provide abortion, we think it’s important. It’s a legal service that women need access to in this country.”

“But what Speaker Ryan is trying to do here and what Vice President Pence has been trying to do,” she said, “is end access to everything that would prevent unintended pregnancy in this country, including family planning services. And that’s the real irony here.”

SIGN THE PETITION! Congress Must De-Fund Planned Parenthood Immediately

At another point in the interview, Richards also claimed that the current efforts to defund Planned Parenthood have “nothing to do with abortion,” a statement that is entirely untrue.

Planned Parenthood is the No. 1. abortion provider in the U.S. In its 2014-2015 annual report, Planned Parenthood reported doing 323,999 abortions. The abortion group claims that none of the tax dollars it receives go toward abortions, but evidence shows otherwise.

An analysis of Planned Parenthood’s reports from the past 10 years found that its client numbers went down 14 percent, birth control went down 14 percent and breast exams went down 61 percent; at the same time its taxpayer funding went up 103 percent. Abortions also went up 27 percent, according to the analysis by Right to Life of Michigan.

Richards’ salary also nearly doubled to almost $1 million in the past five years, according to IRS forms.

A new report from the Charlotte Lozier Institute also found that Planned Parenthood affiliates across the U.S. engaged in $12.8 million in waste, abuse and fraudulent over-billing using federal tax dollars, with some of that going toward abortions.

Americans voted Republican majorities in the U.S. House and Senate, and Republican leaders to the White House. The election results are a strong signal that the American people are tired of Planned Parenthood’s rampant, unchecked abortion practices, and want their tax dollars to go to real health care providers that offer quality, comprehensive care to women and families.
