Tim Tebow Helps Mom Adopt a Deaf Boy Abandoned in China

China has many orphans in need of a loving home. Many are girls, reflecting a cultural preference for boys as well as the cruel implications of the One Child Policy, but many other children are abandoned because they have disabilities, ranging from cataracts to congenital heart disease, and their families simply cannot afford their ongoing medical care, the Globe and Mail reports.

However, in the case of a 4-year-old deaf boy, he didn’t even have the comparative luxury of an orphanage. He was abandoned at a Chinese train station. Recently with the financial assistance of the Tim Tebow Foundation, little Alex finally has his “forever family” here in America.

“I’ve always wanted to adopt. I just knew that’s how I wanted to build my family,” Alex’s soon-to-be adoptive mother, Christine Mullican, said in a YouTube video.

In the video, Mullican shared how her American family had received an email with Alex’s photo and circumstances, and was captivated by his story.

“So I knew right then who our son was and that’s when we started all our paperwork,” she said.

Initially, everything seemed promising with the adoption when Mullican’s husband receiving a new job. Not long later, however, he died from a pulmonary embolism, according to the report. His early death and the ensuing financial struggles complicated the dream of adoption.

However, the Tim Tebow Foundation, founded by the pro-life football star, offered Mullican a grant to fund Alex’s adoption. The Foundation began in the Philippines where Tebow was born while his parents were serving as missionaries. In addition to offering international outreach, food, shelter and resources to orphans in need, Tebow’s foundation offers grants to families seeking to adopt children with special needs. To date, they have offered 56 adoption grants that helped with placing 44 orphaned children in loving families.

When Mullican first arrived in China to bring Alex home, she said the child was understandably unhappy and scared. She said she took him to a playground where he began to smile and opene up. Back in America, the Tim Tebow Foundation provided a second grant to cover medical testing, vision testing, and CT scans.

Mullican said there aren’t many opportunities for deaf people in China, and deaf orphans typically have an even more dismal future in that country. Yet by loving him despite his disability and bringing him to America, “the whole world opened up to him.” Mullican expressed her happiness to watch him grow and learn new things.

The Tim Tebow Foundation’s mission is to bring faith, hope, and love to those needing a brighter day in their darkest hour of need. Indeed the have brought just that to Alex in providing him a family and a better tomorrow.
