Rejection, the feeling of being unwanted, is something we don’t want to experience, but is usually part of our lives. What is the Christian way of dealing with the feeling of being rejected? A Christian woman with a painful past tells us how.
All her life, Lysa TerKerust has felt that nobody wanted to be with her. This feeling stemmed from the fact that her father left their home when she was still a young girl, and never returned.
“I didn’t realise how much that rejection had embedded deep in my heart until the last five years,” TerKerust told the Christian Broadcasting Network. “That lie turned into I’m not good enough which affected all my future relationships.
TerKerust admitted that she struggled with the fear of being rejected until she became an adult.
“We connect an event from today to something harsh someone once said. Their line becomes a label. The label becomes a lie. And the lie becomes a liability in how we think about ourselves and interact in every future relationship,” she said.
Amid her despondency, TerKerust turned to her faith in God.
“Rejection isn’t just an emotional feeling. It’s a message that alters what you believe about yourself,” TerKerus shared. “The truth is that the Lord has chosen me as a treasured possession.”
She shared a very powerful story when a few years ago she visited the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus Christ prayed and spent his last moments on Earth before He was crucified.
“The first time I stood in the Garden of Gethsemane, tears ran down my face,” she recalled.
The Christian woman said she had an astounding vision while standing on the sacred place.
“I saw myself looking at my dad with pleading eyes to write the opening scene of my life with the theme of love. He chose rejection instead,” she shared.
From then on, TerKerust said she stopped being stuck in the past, and chose to move on with a stronger faith in God instead.
