Meditation:
[Jesus:] “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ Or what king, going out to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against..

One of the more difficult ministry assignments is when a pastor is appointed to serve an established church that is plateaued or in decline. According to Thom Rainer, 80% of the 400,000 churches in America are plateaued or declining (Breakout Churches). It is a long journey from where these churches are to where God wants them to be. One of the more difficult truths, in fact, is that not everybody in the church will want it to be revitalized. A special set of skills is required to lead a stagnan..

In the late 1980s and early 1990s an intriguing question burst into the evangelical conversation: what is the gospel? Many evangelism ministries were taken back as if saying, “Are you kidding us? We all know what the gospel is. It can be packaged in four steps to God, four laws for salvation, or a simple bridge diagram on a napkin.” Other voices, however, would not be stopped. “That may be your idea of ‘gospel,’” they countered, “but it is certainly not what Jesus and the New Testam..

Last week, I taught for two days at City Church’s Institute, wherein my church offers an opportunity each summer for church members (mainly college students) to learn theology, church history, cultural engagement, etc. along with a church internship and a mission trip (or two).
One morning, I taught on the development and authority of Scripture. My lecture started with general and special revelation, and then moved into oral tradition and eventually all the way to the for..

In the wake of the appalling attack in Orlando, I’ve released this joint statement with the Archbishop of York John Sentamu:
“After Sunday’s attack in Orlando, as Christians we must speak out in support of LGBTI people, who have become the latest group to be so brutally targeted by the forces of evil. We must pray, weep with those affected, support the bereaved, and love without qualification.
The obligation to object to these acts of persecution, and to support tho..
