The 2016 Republican Convention starts today in Cleveland, Ohio. It may be a strange one. Most A-list political speakers are not coming, but we will be getting lots of athletes whom presidential nominee Donald Trump hails as “winners.” A big number of the delegates who will be voting for Trump nevertheless do not care for him, which might mean the traditional spontaneous demonstrations will lack their normal enthusiasm. There are worries about protests and violence outside the hall and what Never..

Turkey has a tradition of practicing a more moderate type of Islam with a more secular government than other middle eastern states. Last weekend, parts of the military staged a coup attempt, promising a restoration of democracy, human rights, ..

Donald Trump picked Indiana governor Mike Pence as his Vice Presidential running-mate.
Pence has been well-regarded by social and religious conservatives. That reputation was tarnished a bit recently when he first approved of a religious exemption for LGBT laws in his state, but then rescinded it when faced with pressure from corporate interests. He may have alienated both sides of the debate.
So does Trump’s choice of a conservative, Christian governor and former Congressman make you feel bette..

The shootings of the last few weeks–of black suspects; of police–have at least provoked what has seemed to be impossible: a national conversation over race.
We have black people defending the police; gun rights activists defending a black man shot by police; liberals questioning their extreme rhetoric; conservatives showing empathy for both sides. Moving outside the usual categories is a helpful thing, if we are going to face up to our problems and do something about them. So says conservative c..

British prime minister David Cameron stepped down from office after his efforts to keep the United Kingdom in the European Union were voted down. Under parliamentary systems, the head of the party with a majority in the legislature becomes the Prime Minister. So the new leader of the Conservative Party and thus the new Prime Minister is Theresa May. She is the first woman to serve in that office since Margaret Thatcher. She is also an active member in the Church of England.I wonder if this heral..

The word “mercy” is gaining more and more currency in Christianity these days. It has long been a favorite word of LMCS president Matthew Harrison, and, more recently, of Pope Francis. Kory Stamper, a lexicographer with Merriam-Webster dictionary, gives its history after the jump.
Originally, “mercy” meant clemency for an offender. The word came from the same root a “merchandise,” referring to a “payment.” So a plea for mercy meant that “the object of mercy was not deserving of compassion, that ..
