Why Lust Must Never Be A Part Of Any Christian Marriage

One of the biggest lies about lust is that it doesn't hurt marriage. Pornography, lustful thoughts and urges can often be reduced to nothing more than an answer to a "natural call." But even that claim in itself just comes to show how serious of an issue lust is to have something so common that we call it "natural" when it's really something that also naturally destroys.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers reported that 56 percent of divorce cases involved one spouse having an uncontrollable obsession over pornography. Lust is also a biological trigger to dopamine that magnetizes us to idle time spent trying to serve a craving that won't seem to be satisfied.

Of all things that lust destroys, marriages are the most likely to fall apart because of a "little lust." Here are three reasons why lust must be addressed and surrendered if we want to avoid ruining our marriages.

Lust Destroys God's Image In You And Your Spouse

Lust, like any other sin, will always start small, but it never remains small. It grows bigger and bigger as the appetite for it does. And as it grows, it starts to eat into the value and worth of our spouses and even ourselves.

To lust for another woman or man is to indirectly say that your spouse is not enough to satisfy your needs, destroying God's imputed value in them. It also reduces us to creatures that mindlessly answer to cravings, when we know that's not how we should truly be. God made us to be master of our own drives and decisions. You are in control because God is in control.

Lust Reduces Sex To A Tool For Satisfaction Instead Of Being A Gift Of God

There is nothing wrong with sex, but it must be enjoyed within the boundaries set by the creator of sex. No one goes around claiming that they know Facebook more than Mark Zuckerberg or iPhones better than Apple, but it's funny how people can sometimes act like they know their sexuality better than God.

Sex is a wonderful gift from God that is meant to be enjoyed, but also to be stewarded. It comes from God and is therefore defined by Him.

Lust Screams For Our Way Over God's Way

Things are better when God is in charge of them, but people can sometimes make the mistake of thinking that things will be better when they have their way. In Matthew 6:10, Jesus teaches us to pray saying "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." God is to have His way on this earth, in our bodies and in our minds.

When He doesn't and we try to play God and decide we're better off without God, we put ourselves in trouble. That's exactly what happens when we fall into the clutches of lust. But God wants you free and He knows that the only way to true freedom is for us to walk in His ways not ours.
