CINCINNATI, Ohio — Jerry Falwell, Jr., the president of Liberty University, who has repeatedly sought to convince the public that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is a Christian, asserted at the Republican National Convention last night that not voting Trump is a vote for Clinton.
“We are at a crossroads, where our first priority must be saving our nation. We must unite behind Donald Trump and Mike Pence,” he said. “If you’re a conservative, a decision not to vote or to vote for a third party candidate is a de facto vote for Hillary Clinton.”
Falwell spoke for approximately seven minutes as he built his case as to why Americans should vote for Trump.
“I first supported Mr. Trump after I spent 20 years as a young lawyer working with my father to restore Liberty University to financial health,” he explained. “Since 2007, Liberty University has become the largest and most prosperous Christian university in the world, and I am convinced that Donald Trump can work that same magic for our nation with $19 trillion dollars in debt.”
“My family and I have grown to love and respect the Trumps for other reasons,” Falwell continued. “We have never met such a genuine, loving family. I truly believe Mr. Trump is America’s blue collar billionaire. He is down-to-earth. He loves America and the American people. He is a true patriot and the champion of the common man.”
He told those gathered that a Clinton presidency could spell the nation’s demise.
“If Hillary Clinton is allowed to appoint the next few Supreme Court justices, that in itself could be a fatal blow to our Republic,” Falwell said. “On the other hand, a vote for Donald Trump is a vote to uphold the Second Amendment right to bear arms. … A vote for Trump is a vote to appoint conservative, pro-life justices to the Supreme Court.”
As previously reported, while some believe that Christians must vote for the “lesser of two evils” despite determining that both candidates will rule contrary to God’s law, others state that the concept is flawed and unbiblical.
“I think the only righteous thing to do is vote for neither,” Michael Peroutka, 2004 presidential candidate under the Constitution Party, and co-founder of the Institute on the Constitution, told Christian News Network. “I don’t think God requires you to vote for evil.”
He stated that the voting practices of Christians have contributed to the sinking of our nation into the quagmire that it is stuck in today.
“We have voted [for years] for the lesser of two evils, so we get evil,” he said. “And we deserve it because we vote for it.”
Peroutka outlined that he does not believe voting “conservative” or along party lines is the proper biblical mindset.
“I would ask you, even empirically, where has that gotten us?” he declared. “When we’re voting for a conservative, we’re using the wrong standard. [You’re basically voting to] kill one less baby than a liberal.”
Christians are commanded by God to select rulers that are “able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness” (Exodus 18:21), Peroutka noted. He explained that Christians must vote for those who seek to uphold and implement God’s law in our nation, as that is the only righteous standard not based on the opinion of men. Possessing an “anyone but Hillary” attitude is not a biblical mindset, he said.
“[For Christians to reject God’s law] is a dangerous and foolish thing to do,” Peroutka stated. “The lesser of two evils, of course, is evil. And when you choose the lesser of two evils, you [still] choose evil. And when you choose evil and you get evil, you are responsible because you chose it, didn’t you?”
