Watch: A new faith-oriented featurette for Queen of Katwe

queenofkatwe-5

Queen of Katwe tells the true story of a poor girl from Uganda who becomes a chess-playing champion with the help of a Christian missionary. For the most part, the marketing around the film has shied away from the “faith-based” aspects of the story, and it remains to be seen whether the film itself will get into them in any detail — but as of today we have a new featurette that features the real-life missionary and his protégé, and yes, it includes a brief nod to the missionary’s faith.

Here is the featurette, which is very similar to the secular ‘Labor of Love’ featurette that I posted yesterday but has some new faith-oriented bits:

Queen of Katwe director Mira Nair previously made a 13-minute documentary about the missionary, Robert Katende, called A Fork a Spoon and a Knight:

The 700 Club also had a report on Katende and his protégé, Phiona Mutesi:

The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto film festival on September 10. It will then have a limited release on September 23 and go wide on September 30.
