Emma was a great cook and I will never forget the first lunch she made for us. Mom and Dad came home for lunch and as we sat to eat Emma was nowhere to be found. Dad found her in the living room eating by herself. He took her by the arm and almost dragged her to our family’s dining table. He looked at her and said “Emma if you are good enough to cook food for us, then you are good enough to eat it with us.”
From that moment, she was not “the help.” She was family. I hugged and kissed her when she came and left. And she taught me as a 6-year-old that color doesn’t define us; love and mutual respect do.
That sentiment solidified and deepened permanently three years later when I devoted my life to a dark-skinned Jewish Messiah named Jesus who became forever my Lord and Savior. I remember clearly the night when Martin Luther King was assassinated and the sadness I felt but even then I knew King was right: the only solution to racism is changed hearts. And only Jesus can change hearts.
Our nation, in some ways, has come full circle. From Ferguson to Charleston to St. Louis, many still harbor racist attitudes. It has become a barrier to even considering the Christian faith among many African-Americans. But as a Christian, I know that every Confederate flag in the world is not worth one human soul of any race.

The hottest dining ticket on the planet right now?
Italy’s Osteria Francescana, which knocked out Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca to earn the top spot at the 2016 World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards.
Osteria Francescana, which came in second at last year’s awards, is located in the small city of Modena in northern Italy’s Emilia Romagna region.
It’s helmed by chef Massimo Bottura, a man credited with reinventing classic Italian cuisine by offering dishes that combine tradition and irreverence and touch all the senses.
Coming in at number two on the list was last year’s champion, El Celler de Can Roca, while New York’sEleven Madison Park moved up two places to grab the number three spot.
While accepting his award at the ceremony, held June 13 in New York, a thrilled Bottura held up an Italian flag, saying he felt he might cry he was so emotional.
“I want to thank everyone,” he said. “Our job is all about hard work. People think we are rock stars, we are going here or there. It’s all about our work — in the kitchen, every day, to work and succeed.”

WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders called Tuesday for a “fundamental transformation” of the Democratic Party that would include new leadership at the Democratic National Committee, electoral reform and a progressive agenda that makes it “crystal clear” Democrats stand with working people and the poor.
The Vermont senator, speaking outside his Washington campaign headquarters, said his presidential campaign has been about “transforming America” and he plans to take that fight to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia in July.
Sanders also called for open primaries — in which independents could vote for Democratic candidates — and for doing away with superdelegates, the party officials and leaders who are free to vote for the candidate of their choice at the convention. And he argued for same-day voter registration.
“We need a party which [“that,” Bernie] is prepared to stand up for the disappearing middle class, for the 47 million people in this country who are living in poverty, and take on the greed of the powerful special interests that are doing so much harm to this country, who have so much power over the political and economic life of our country,” he said.

Barnaby posted her remarkable survival story to Facebook on Tuesday, along with a photo showing her covered in dirt, blood and poplar powder.
“In the hopes that by posting this, I can reduce how many times I will have to tell this story,” her post began.
More than 150 friends and family members commented on it, praising the survival skills and smart thinking that kept her alive. Some even offered jokes.
“Morel mushrooms $5/lb,” one friend wrote. “Your incredible brave dog Joey priceless.”
Her story was also picked up by CBC, which ran an interview with Barnaby on Wednesday.
Some readers questioned her story, however, finding its confluence of wild animals too much to believe.
“The boy who cried wolf is an old parable, but the only morel to this story, is that it comes from the same stuff the mushrooms were growing out of,” one readerwrote.
“This story is more fiction than real,” wrote another. “You have a greater chance of turning into a werewolf under a full moon than you do of being attacked by a wolf.”
But both Barnaby and Caudron insist it really happened.
