The head of a Roman Catholic school in England has strongly rejected the suggestion of a broadcast journalist for educational institutions to make kids and their teachers watch pornographic materials in classes, calling the proposal as "problematic."
In his blog post quoted by The Catholic Herald, Dr. James Whitehead, headmaster of Downside School, said that openly showing pornography to schoolchildren will violate the beliefs of many faith-based learning institutions in the United Kingdom.
"Many schools in the United Kingdom were founded by Christian organisations; in fact, several thousand remain explicitly Anglican, Catholic or Methodist, and other denominations also run a number of schools. There are also other faith schools run by Jewish, Buddhist or Islamic foundations; many of these would find difficulty in justifying the study of pornography in school," Whitehead said.
He also maintained that pornography goes against morality.
"In short, because for the spiritually inclined, it is important that young people focus on the morality that should underpin human relationships, rather than begin to study a form of interaction that is essentially a negation of this," he added.

The Catholic school official was reacting to a suggestion recently made by broadcaster and journalist Dame Jenni Murray for young boys and girls to be put together in classes and make them analyse pornographic materials.
Murray also said pornography should be presented to schoolchildren "in exactly the same way as you teach them to read all the other cultures around them."
Whitehead, however, maintained that adopting Murray's suggestion will run counter to values the children should be learning in school such as gender equality, commitment and justice in human relationships.
"If we value human dignity as a means of achieving gender equality, this cannot be served through the study of pornography," the Catholic school head said.
